The Vinci Summer School was born in 2006 thanks to collaboration between the Leonardo Library and the University of Florence, in the context of the action programme entitled “Technology as a cultural asset. The history of technology and technical drawing in the Renaissance and early modern era as a common European heritage” (www.renaissance-heritage.net), co-financed by the European Commission – Culture 2000.
The first course of the Vinci Summer School (September 2006) was devoted to “Technical drawing in the Renaissance”.

The Summer School is open to young graduates from all countries, employs the services of the chief universities of Europe and elsewhere and aims at forming an international network of high quality in subjects related to Leonardo da Vinci, his times and the Renaissance in general, his legacy and his reception in the modern and contemporary world. Particular care is taken to guarantee an effective interdisciplinary approach, especially between the Humanistic and the technical-scientific fields of knowledge.

The courses are for the moment annual, and involve living in for 7-10 days. Bursaries are available to cover travel and board and lodging, varying according to each student’s place of origin.
The courses take place in the premises of the Leonardo Library and the Leonardo Museum, and benefit from the use of the documentation to be found in the Biblioteca Leonardiana as well as that of e-Leo, the digital consultation and study system of the archives of the history of technology created and now in the process of implementation by the Leonardo Library itself.

The Vinci Summer School is supported by the Commune of Vinci and by private sponsors. It is managed by the Leonardo da Vinci International Studies and Documentation Centre.
